Eight New Godzilla Films on Blu-ray From Sony

Last Tuesday, Sony released eight Godzilla films on Blu-ray in four sets under the title "The Toho Godzilla Collection".

All eight films are each on their own disc, mostly no notable special features, but some have a few.  I'll go into more detail below.

Godzilla VS King Ghidorah (1991)

Godzilla VS King Ghidorah is probably the best looking feature in the collection.  The movie kind of "reboot" the Godzilla series after the failure that was Godzilla VS Biollante.  This film is oddly a time travel movie, but it works well.  Time travelers from 2204 come to the present time and inform them that Godzilla will destroy Tokyo.  To prevent this, they propose going back in time and removing Godzilla before he mutates from a normal sized dinosaur.  There are a few twists, but King Ghidorah shows up! The disc features English and Japanese audio tracks and subtitles.

Special features:
  • Original trailers
Featured monsters:
  • Godzilla
  • King Ghidorah
  • Mecha-Ghidorah

Godzilla VS Mothra (1992)

Also known as "Godzilla and Mothra: Battle for Earth" in the United States, Godzilla VS Mothra was the second successful Godzilla film of the 1990s.  Without taking inflation into account, this is the highest grossing Godzilla movie ever.  Tons of environmental messages in this film, but isn't that kind of what Godzilla is all about?  The disc features English and Japanese audio tracks and subtitles.

Special features:
  • Original Trailers
Featured monsters:
  • Godzilla
  • Mothra
  • Battra

Godzilla VS Mechagodzilla II

Also known as "Godzilla VS Mechagodzilla", this film shared no ties to any previous Mechagodzilla appearances.  In this film, the remains of Mecha-Ghidorah are found and used to create some weapons, notably Mecahgodzilla.  The disc features English and Japanese audio tracks and subtitles.

Special features:
  • Original trailers
Featured monsters:
  • Godzilla
  • Mechagodzilla
  • Baby Godzilla
  • Rodan

Godzilla VS Spacegodzilla

From his quarrel with Mothra and Biollante, some Godzilla DNA is sent into space and mutated in some space radiation to create Spacegodzilla!  The human race has also created their next giant robot that will inevitably get destroyed, this time it's called MOGUERA.  The disc features English and Japanese audio tracks and subtitles.

Special features:
  • Original trailers
Featured Monsters:
  • Godzila
  • Spacegodzilla
  • Baby Godzilla
  • MOGUERA

Godzilla VS Destroyah (1995)

Godzilla VS Destroyah was the last Godzilla film in the Heisei series of films.  They ended the series to make way for the American Godzilla film.  This is generally considered one of the best Godzilla films.  The film features (arguably) Godzilla greatest foe, Destroyah.  The disc features English and Japanese audio tracks and subtitles.

Special features:
  • Original trailers
Featured monsters:
  • Godzilla
  • Spacegodzilla
  • Baby Godzilla

Godzilla VS Megaguirus

Godzilla VS Megaguirus is the second film in the Millenium series.  Godzilla 2000 is the first, but for some reason that one isn't on Blu-ray.  This film features Godzilla going up against a giant dragonfly.  This film also features a giant bug queen known as Meganulon.  The disc features English and Japanese audio tracks and subtitles.

Special features:
  • Original trailers
Featured monsters:
  • Godzilla
  • Megaguirus
  • Meganulon

Godzilla: Tokyo SOS

A number of films were released between Godzilla VS Megaguirus and Tokyo SOS, but they have yet to be released on Blu-ray.  This film starts off with another heavily damaged giant robot.  Godzilla fights Mothra and Kamoebas, then Mechagodzilla shows up!  The disc features English and Japanese audio tracks and subtitles.

Special features:
  • "Making of Godzilla" featurette
  • Original trailers
Featured monsters:
  • Godzilla
  • Mothra
  • Kamoebas
  • Mechagodzilla

Godzilla: Final Wars

Here we have the "Destroy All Monsters" of the Millennium series.  In this film, Godzilla has been frozen in the ocean, and the world is peaceful.  Suddenly, almost every major city in the world is attacked by a different monster.  Some crazy alien stuff happens, Godzilla unfreezes, and starts battling them all!  This was the last Godzilla film, and they certainly went out with a bang.  It's a little cheesy, and some of the CGI is pretty awful, but it's very enjoyable and was a great way to end the character.

Special features:
  • "Godzilla: B Roll to Film" featurette
Featured monsters:
  • Godzilla
  • Gigan
  • King Caesar
  • Anguirus
  • Kumonga
  • Kamacuras
  • Ebirah
  • Mada
  • Hedorah
  • Rodan
  • Minilla
  • Mothra
  • Monster X
  • Monster X II
  • Zilla
