Batman Arkham Origins Announced with First Images!

After the amazing Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, it was just a matter of time before another Batman was to be announced.

For those few of you who haven't played it, Batman Arkham Asylum is a 2009 video game based on Batman and related characters.  Some consider it a continuation of Batman the Animated Series as several voice actors from the show return for the game.  The game takes place strictly in and around the island Arkham Asylum is located on.  The game covers the events that takes place when Joker takes over the asylum and let's most of the villains go free.

The game was followed up by a very critically acclaimed sequel, Batman Arkham City, was released in 2011.  The game involves Dr. Strange creating a "mega-prison" in an old district of Gotham by blocking it off with massive walls.  Bruce Wayne is thrown into Arkham City, and that's where I'm going to leave that!

Batman Arkham Origins is obviously an origins story.  It follows a young Batman encountering some of his famous villains for a first time.

From the few images released so far, a few things are apparent.  Batman obviously has different armor, but theoretically it is his first suit, and not perfect.  The above image also shows what appears to be Deathstroke!  For those of you who don't know, Deathstroke is a mercenary assassin and very dangerous.  He reminds me of a less funny Deadpool.  Swords and pistols are definitely his thing.

From the little that has been revealed so far, the game's plot revolved around the Black Mask putting a hit out on Batman, drawing dangerous assassins to Gotham.  In the DC Universe, there are two Black Masks from two different eras.  I would assume this is Black Mask II, a former Arkham Doctor who becomes a prominent member of a crime syndicate in Gotham.

Black Mask is not new to the Arkham series.  He is features as part of the challenge maps in Arkham City, and is featured in the Arkham City comics (assuming they are canon).

The game also states that Batman will be teaming up with Captain James Gordon, who eventually becomes Commissioner Gordon.  I think it would be safe to assume that Batman will have to prove himself to the police force, so I assume you will battle police at some point.  The above images certainly might imply that.

I have read on many forums that people are quite upset that Rocksteady, the developers of the first two games, will not be working on this one.  While this is sometimes seen as negative, I'm okay with it.  Rocksteady as said they are working on a Batman game featuring members of the Justice League that will not be released until 2014 at the earliest.  Obviously, this is not that game.  I would much rather have a company building on the Arkham games that are already great, then have a newcomer try to tackle the Justice League.  I know Rocksteady can do a good job.

If you are still worried, the creative director of this game was the lead director in Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Prototype.  To my knowledge, Ultimate Destruction is still considered one of the best comic book games available.

In addition the Batman Arkham Origins, a portable game, Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate is being released simultaneously.  It will be released on the 3DS and Playstation Vita, and is a sequel to Batman Arkham Origins.  The game will be a 2D action game apparently, being compared to Metroid by the developers.
